  43. Why do I hate my PC?
  44.  
  45. It is a 286... it is functionally obslete.  It is not a good game machine.
  46. I've put too much money into it... for what I spent a year ago, I could
  47. have an awesome machine of some other sort.

  49. Why do I like my PC?
  50.  
  51. The standard machine.  Everything available for it if I could afford it.
  52. Parts are cheap.  It is modular (I'm not afraid to open up the case and
  53. fuck with things... it is easy).  So, for instance, when my motherboard
  54. dies... at it is in the process of doing... all I have to do it opne
  55. up the machine, yank the thing out, and pop another in.
  56.  
  57. Peripherals are cheap.
  58.  
  59. Disk controllers cost $11... add 2 serial ports and a parallel, and
  60. the price is $24.  I *never* pay retail.  There are tons of used parts
  61. out there... the swaps are dominated by PC parts... I can buy a used
  62. 40 meg ide drive, add an $11 controller, and I'm set.  I don't have
  63. to pay $129 for a disk controller, like I've seen elsewhere.  20
  64. meg used drives go for $30...
  65.  
  66. However, I costs $1000 to get a basic machine, vs. $500 for a
  67. basic ST/Amiga (Macs, on the other hand).
  68.  
  69. Anyway, I'm working on getting an Amiga... if anyone will sell me
  70. an ST for $175 (how much would it cost to hook it to my multi-sync?)
  71. I might consider it as well.

  73. Anyway, entertainment wise, I feel IBMs suck, which is why I'm
  74. looking into the Amiga/Atari sectors...

  107. What do you mean by 'new'?  My best friend just bought a new Amiga 500 and it
  108. didn't come with AmigaDos 2.0 and the ECS Agnus/Denise and he can't use the
  109. productivity mode thats being discussed without spending quite a bit of money
  110. to upgrade it...

  132. Rats, you don't have a color monitor.  Well, if you ever get a chance
  133. to hook up the STE to a TV (color preferably :~) , get a copy of the
  134. Bird demo.  I'm pretty sure it's at atari.archive; it's very old too, but
  135. does a good job at showing what the blitter can do.  Run it with the
  136. blitter on and run it with the blitter off.  The demo shows a bird
  137. flying across the screen with a seascape background.
  138.  
  139. On a monochrome monitor, if you have a copy of a paint program which will
  140. show a block of the screen when you move it around to paste it, you can
  141. use that (with blitter on and off) to see what affect the blitter has.
  142.  
  143. For most uses however, QuickST, TurboST, or NVDI are best.  If you're
  144. doing a lot of graphics and/or animation work, the blitter will be useful
  145. to you.

  311. And thank god for that.  I wouldn't WANT half the garbage that's in Unix in
  312. AmigaDos.  Unix is good for what it does (i.e. a multi-user environment that
  313. goes to great pains to insure that another user cannot interfere with another
  314. user.), however, i prefer speed and headache free operation.

  316. By the way, Unix or Mach are not *that* much more "advanced" if that's what
  317. you wish to call it.  It's just more features (which may or may not be
  318. wanted).  by your reasoning then, Multics is a FAR more advanced OS than Unix
  319. (simply because it has more features).  There's more to an OS than how many
  320. MAN pages it takes up.

  423. I am using gnuemacs 18.57 and Bammi's ispell port (both are
  424. excellent ports, many thanks to Scott and Jwahar). Howerver,
  425. I am unable to invoke ispell from gnuemacs using the ispell.el
  426. in the ispell package. That does not surprise me, as I would
  427. expect to have to set an environment variable or a path in the .el
  428. file. However, after playing around with it for awhile, I could not
  429. get it to work. Does anyone on the net use ispell from gnuemacs (18.57)?
  430. If so, would you let me know what I have to set up in order to do it?

  432. On a related note, Edgar Roeder(sp?) posted a compile.el and then
  433. a patch to it to create a compiles.el. My version of patch will not h
  434. handle this file. Would some kind soul email me an updated compiles.el?

  462. Well, here is how to connect a Microsoft Mouse to an Atari ST.  (520/1040)
  463. The Atari has a 9-pin D-type connector.  The Microsoft Mouse has a rather
  464. strange connector on the end.  To prevent having to cut the mouse cable up,
  465. I made this adaptor.  If you still can't follow it, please let me know and
  466. I'll try to redescribe it.  This does work for me.  I've been using it for
  467. 6 or so months now with no problems at all.  It does take some soldering
  468. skills, so if you're not so hot at soldering, find a friend to help.
  469.  
  470. As far as I know, this does not effect your Atari's warranty.  However, I
  471. have not asked Atari. :-)

  568. Hmmm...I have 1.4 (6 chip set / 520ST / 2 meg) and Falcon runs just fine.
  569. I even have both the copy-protected and un-copy-protected versions.

  586. Hello, I seem to be having trouble using manx's Aztec shell v3.6a
  587. under spectre (v3.0). Whenever I try to launch the shell spectre bombs
  588. and returns "bus error"... this bomb is not recoverable (I can only restart
  589. the finder).
  590.         I use this shell alot at work as a platform for the aztec C68k (MPW)
  591. compiler. It works on all the machines at work (plusses,se's,II's) and I was
  592. really suprised to find it crashing with spectre.
  593.

  672. Why not get TOS 1.4 then you would have lots more room, it uses these RAM
  673. than TOS 1.2 , plus you don't nead Fatspeed and you can do away with
  674. Folder Fix, and you would end up liking your machine more..:-)..
